I don't really like the idea about going along with the same format that ALL the other main pokemon games have had. The 1 or 2 team trying to take over the world motif is getting a little dry. Something radically different would be refreshing. Some ideas I had! -A large war is happening between many rival nations. Maybe something like World War II would make for a very different game experience. The player could decide between two storylines: stay at home and protect his town (but end up getting kidnapped or taken to a work camp), or go off to war and fight with his comrades and pokemon. -Extreme climate change. Humanity has gone too far with its consumption, use of resources, loss of habitat for pokemon, extinction of pokemon (even common pokemon like pikachu, zubat, etc have gone extinct), and now the Pokemon World is having rapid fluctuation in weather and the Pokemon have retaliated against the humans, over-running cities, etc... -You are the leader of a crime syndicate which poaches, kills, and traffics exotic Pokemon to other regions. You are being chased down by the feds/interpol or something and you must hide in plain sight. Stuff goes down and you can either choose to continue to poach Pokemon, or have a change of heart and become an environmentalist. -The Pokemon World is going to end in 100 years as foretold by the world's leading scientists (the sun is going to eat up the planet). You are one of the lucky 100 who get to travel into outerspace and travel to a habitable world using the technology introduced in ORAS. You enter through a wormhole with 99 other people and come to a planet in a galaxy far away. The earth's scientists say this is a habitable planet, but what you find will amaze you... -You are the local police chief to a major city. There have been a string of disappearances revolving around Pokemon Trainers. You must find out why these people are disappearing. (It turns out to be aliens) -Panic has struck the competitive Pokemon scene. GameFreak has decided to end the main series games and you are freaking out trying to think what you will ever do with your life. You look on the internet and find this person saying they can bring you into a virtual reality of the Pokemon World. When you finally strap yourself into the gear, it turns out they will take you to another dimension where Pokemon is a reality... (this is my fav idea) I like the idea of the crime syndicate. I know how you feel about the team taking over the world cliche, but what if you were on the side of the evil team? You could be like an admin going undercover and get all the badges and whatnot, until you reveal that you're part of the team. Instead of fighting the bad guys, you're fighting the good guys. Or maybe have two teams and foil the other team's plans. An idea that I have is that everyone in this planet is evil and the team you're part of is trying to restore peace to the world. It could change the game up while keeping the idea of there being an "antagonist" team

I'm going along with Saverdien on the whole, "being apart of an evil team" thing. It's a simple, but excellent change.

I actually do like the normal villainous teams, since you have something to fight against. You can't really fight against climate change unless we make people recycle their Pokeballs :^). Maybe it'd be cool to have the villainous team being a group of superstitious people who believe the world is going to end / has to end, so they try to survive at the cost of others. (Like Maya 2012). What would you guys think of this?
Edit: So I thought that this may be cool if my legend gets chosen as the main one (It's a spider which controls the strings which connect everything as in the string theory)
Basically the villainous team is a superstitious group of people like I described up. Their legends say that the everything should end at a certain date. (Maybe like a week after you hear it?) They heavily believe in these and go ahead and end everything themselves, as it's supposed to be this way. They heard about a Pokemon which can stop everything from being together, causing eternal chaos when it's removed. So they try to capture it and stop all what has ever happened.
It's sorta different from Palkia / Dialga since it doesn't control space or time, but keeps spacetime intact.

@snaquaza, what if the world is really ending and humans and pokemon must find a way to survive (i.e. by stopping what's ending the world or going off to another planet)?

Sounds strange since you can't actually fight against nature, and what do you want to do in space?

I'm not sure... There could be a period of planet hopping or something, or have like an S.S. Zarel or something that is super big with its own biomes and large cabins etc... Part 1 could be like the earth dying part 2 could be the ship part 3 could be colonization and exploration

My fav ideas -A Disaster Struck Region, trying to rebuild itself, where the player is a rich person, kind enough to donate money to each rebuilding town, but the evil team is trying to destroy each town to get the whole region for some secret mission, stopping the player at each town, and he has to battle them, a lot. Also, he meets a secret society working against the evil organisation. How is this idea? The Map can have so much different types of cities and towns. I guess this story can has many more adventures and sidequests to it. -A Time Travel Story, A player accidently goes back in time due to his friend *some pokemon* Where he learns how the people lived earlier, how there were no defined routes, a different type of pokemon league, different puzzles for gyms and also, an old fashioned evil team, trying to find a way back home. That is all, for now. How were they?

One thing that i want is a plot twist. The leader of the evil team cant be obvious and imo should be revealed to be either the rival, the professor, or the Champion. I prefer the later because it will make the final battle a lot bigger and the victory more rewarding

Right now the Death God/End of The World ideas are my favourites (such as the ones by Floette and Snaquaza). Its literally pretty "radical" :^), it gives a lot of room for plot, and its original. The team is not just a "take over the world" plot or a "help one side but not the other" plot. Game Freak would do this kind of thing because Pokemon has kids who play it and they wouldn't want to offend anyone (read: Parents) with this dark and actually quite real issue.

I honestly don't think something too drastic is necessary, but I would like us to take the opportunity to make a darker villainous team, one who simply want to gain control over Pokémon and rule the world/universe with them, while still keeping that classic frame of storyline that the main series of games have always had. I think if the villainous team continue to be a threat post-game, maybe disappearing in between the seventh and eight gyms, apparently defeated as all previous teams have been after that point (with the exception of Plasma), that could also work as the types of Pokémon available after the Elite Four tend to be more flexible, and we could incorporate more legendaries into their agenda after that point. I'm pretty sure someone's already mentioned this, but having an interactive plot depending on whether you win or lose certain battles or choices you make is something I certainly would love to see.

Flerovium, I second deepening the RPG feel to Pokemon. Having a branching storyline might be fun to have. Although it can't be as in depth as like KOTOR or Skyrim or something (due to programming limitation and lack of users willing to code that much into the game for now), a branching story with several possible endings would be very fun to play. Replay value would definitely increase tremendously.

I think that the story needs to be based upon the Cover legend and that we should first decide that.

Alphajores, the two could be decided simultaneously

Also this is still brainstorm, there's no work on actually getting a story yet. If anything we'll decide what the map will be based on first.

It's really good that you brought this matter to attention, that way people that are busy creating a plot that doesn't match a map don't waste time, and possibly people that are creating a map don't waste time as well. In all honesty we should probably put the story first, considering how a setting is given when explaining the plot and a map could based to compliment the story. It's also less restraining to work with a story first, rather than work within the barriers of an established setting which would hinder some creativity. And who knows it could be really fun to make an original map to match an all new original story!

Ive been thinking, and you know what would be the greatest twist of all? If after defeating the evil team and spoiling their plans, the Professor would use the cover legend for his evil goals and it will be revealed that the evil team just wanted to contain it/stop the professor's plans.
Most evil teams dont think that they are evil: Team Aqua and Magma think that what they are doing is for the good of Water and Land pokemon respectively. Team Plasma think that they are liberating pokemon from abusive trainers. And Team Flare think that they are making the world a more beautiful place. There is even a fan theory about how Giovanni's plans are just to right his wrongs and take down Mewtwo, Thats why he needed the Silph Scope so he can have super effective Ghost pokemon and the Master ball as a backup plan if it fails.
What I want is a team that keeps telling you that what they are doing is right but you just brush it off because you think that its just generic bad guy talk until when its too late. its a great twist that the only game which I can think of that used it is Ratchet and Clank 2 (one of my favorite games btw)

Honestly, I would love some sort of war time theme. Destroyed/bombed cities reminiscent of Pokemon Reborn would be awesome.

Here's a crazy suggestion:
Pokémon games seem to progress in technology as the games carry on, but what if we had one set back in time?
You'd have materials similar to Apricorns but native to the region we're in that are used to prototype Pokéballs, but being a Pokémon trainer is only emerging as a profession.
With that in mind you could have the game start off with the Pokémon League officially opening and you could receive your first Pokémon with the initial intention of being a research aide at some point in time when the fact that Gym Leaders have uncommon Pokémon make the professor urge you into competing in the League.
OR...you could go even further into the past and have a time-period like Pokémon Conquest.

Floette, I'm really digging this idea. I would love to play Pokemon in Professor Oak's era or something. Or we could totally do the opposite and have a super futuristic region/game where there are flying vehicles, Half-Pokemon people, aliens, space travel, teleportation, etc...

Well, if Pokemon Showdown Version goes ahead, I'd say near future (a decade or so) would be the best.
